My new job suggests getting the Developer Associate certification for AWS. It’s something I wanted to do earlier, but then I went to work for my previous job that chose to go for Azure. At my new job at DPG Media IT, most services I work with have been put in AWS, so it seems like the right moment to dive into AWS more. Especially in building networks.
In this blog post, I’ll describe my previous AWS experience and how I watched a good video from the AWS official YouTube…
Inspired by an article about Data Mesh by Zhamak Dehghani, DPG Media has decided to move into the Data Mesh direction as well. More information has been written in collaboration with Snowflake. In this blog post, DPG Media aims to share its vision, to focus on the organizational side of things, while being vendor and tool agnostic.
As with many organizations, data is seen as a key enabler for future-proof growth, that is also why “How to become truly data-driven” is a Key Strategic Question for DPG Media. …

Since Apple introduced Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) three years ago to its Safari web browser the advertising industries ability to track, segment internet users across the open web & deliver online advertising campaigns to them has been radically altered. Simple tasks like ensuring someone doesn’t see the same advert ad infinitum is now very difficult, as is deterministically tracking whether an advert served resulted in a sale.
This has been incredibly disruptive for both advertisers & their agency partners but it is publishers who have been most adversely impacted…

Over the last decades, companies have been trying to find a way to drive the most value from their data. They were building data platforms with data warehouses and data lakes. Having all data in a data lake doesn’t mean that the data is treated properly nor put to work in a way that drives the desired value. …

Flash traffic is one of the pitfalls of autoscaling. The most famous example of this kind of traffic is Black Friday. How to tackle scaling difficulties? Let’s find out.
Compared to your normal traffic baseline, flash traffic is an outlier; it’s often multitudes higher than the amount of traffic you receive on average. Another characteristic is its steep curve. Usually, a surge in traffic starts immediately from the moment a campaign begins. These characteristics make it very hard to wire them into…

Following an “AWS Unless” strategy within DPG Media, it was only a matter of time before moving our builds to AWS CodeBuild and AWS CodePipeline. Migrating our legacy pipelines to AWS CodeBuild turned out to be a pretty straightforward job. For that reason, development teams quickly adopted CodeBuild.
However, in general, there was one complaint about CodeBuild: troubleshooting problems in the
buildspec.yml was hard, mainly because access to the remote session was nonexistent.
That was until last July — when AWS announced AWS Session Manager access for…

Google will stop supporting third-party cookies in its Chrome browser. With its Privacy Sandbox, Google is working on a privacy-friendly alternative. Simon Harris shares his insights on the latest development in this area: FLEDGE.
When Google announced the Privacy Sandbox in August 2019, it was a set of proposals to replace third-party cookies in online advertising. At the time, it was ideas rather than ready-to-implement code.
Since then, we have seen counter-proposals from Independent AdTech companies, slow progress during discussions at the W3 Consortium, and little progress…

I’m stating the obvious when I say that Lambda cold starts are a popular topic for discussion. DPG Media is no exception to that. I already spend quite some time on cold start discussions at DPG Media’s coffee corner. So why not write it down, right?
Quite often, I hear people complain about Lambda cold starts. Frequently this results in hours of discussion and a time-consuming quest for an answer. For me, Lambda cold starts are just a non-issue, or at least they should be. …
